About the Event
🗓️ 26th Sept 2024 🕰️ 11-12:30pm
Seminar 1: Exploring the Stalking Landscape
Hosted by Dr. Ann Moulds CBE, founder of Action Against Stalking and a relentless advocate for Scottish stalking legislation, this seminar marks a decade of progress and reflection. As 2024 celebrates the 10th Anniversary of Action Against Stalking, Dr. Moulds will delve into the evolution of stalking awareness and laws over the past 10 years, while also addressing the pressing question, what more can be done to protect victims?
Dr. Moulds’ journey began when she made the courageous decision to waive her anonymity after surviving a terrifying stalking ordeal. By stepping forward publicly, she transformed her personal trauma into a powerful force for change, leading the charge to campaign for the introduction of Scotland’s first standalone anti-stalking legislation Section 39 Criminal Justice and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2010. Her advocacy has since influenced laws in over 50 countries, safeguarding countless victims worldwide.
Her tireless efforts were recognised when she was named Glasgow Times Scotswoman of the Year in 2013 and awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of the West of Scotland in 2023. Recently honoured with a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE), Dr. Moulds continues to inspire global legislative reform, public awareness, and support for victims. This seminar will explore the milestones achieved over the past decade and examine the critical next steps to ensure that stalking victims receive the protection and justice they deserve.
🗓️ 30th Oct 2024 🕰️ 11-12:30pm
Seminar 2: Shaping the Future – Cutting-Edge Research
This seminar, led by Dr. Robert Mclean, Lecturer at the School of Education and Social Sciences at UWS and lead supervisor, alongside PhD candidates Amanda Morrison and Karen Fullerton-Chalmers, will spotlight groundbreaking research that is shaping the future of stalking prevention and victim support. As each PhD student presents their doctoral focus, this session will offer fresh perspectives and critical insights into the complexities surrounding stalking.
Amanda Morrison, with a background in psychology, will present her research on the ‘Exploration of Help-Seeking Behaviours and Outcomes for Victims of Stalking’, shedding light on the challenges victims face when seeking support and the gaps in current systems. Karen Fullerton-Chalmers, whose academic journey includes a bachelor's in criminal justice and a master's in criminal justice & penal change, will explore ‘The Realities of Stalking: The Impact of Film and Television Representation on Victims’, offering a unique analysis of how media portrayals affect real-life experiences of those targeted by stalkers.
By diving into these critical topics, this seminar not only advances scholarly understanding but also paves the way for improved victim support and future policy development. Join us to explore how cutting-edge research can drive meaningful change in stalking prevention.
